Eric Hudson
Director, Talent Acquisition, Nutanix
Eric Hudson didn’t originally plan on building a career in recruiting — like many in the profession, he found his way into it almost by accident.
While attending the University of Alabama, Eric was preparing for a very different future. He had been accepted into a graduate program for sports management and was already set to begin the next phase of his academic journey. At the time, he was also working part-time at Red Lobster while finishing school.
Everything changed after a conversation with a friend.
That friend had recently joined a recruiting firm and encouraged Eric to at least explore the opportunity. Curious, Eric agreed to meet with the team at Aerotek. What followed was a demanding interview process that included ten separate interviews in a single day — a format designed to test candidates under pressure.
Despite already committing to graduate school, the experience stuck with him.
Just one week before confirming his classes, Eric made a last-minute decision that would reshape his career. Instead of pursuing sports management, he accepted the offer and began his career in recruiting.
Eric quickly found his footing at Aerotek and became a contest-winning recruiter, developing a strong foundation in sourcing, candidate evaluation, and high-volume hiring. After two years, he was recruited by Amazon to help launch a brand-new internal hiring model for fulfillment centers.
Eric became the first hire for that initiative and helped staff the company’s first fulfillment center from zero employees to approximately 6,000 within a single year. The program was so successful that it eventually became the standard hiring structure used across Amazon’s fulfillment network.
During his nearly ten years at Amazon, Eric saw the company grow from roughly 50,000 employees to more than 1.5 million. He later transitioned into technical recruiting roles, focusing on software engineers and highly specialized technology positions. His career expanded globally as well, including helping launch Amazon’s operations in Singapore and Australia and overseeing recruiting efforts across the Asia-Pacific region.
Later, Eric joined AWS, where he led hiring for highly secure engineering roles requiring top-level government clearances. After nearly a decade with Amazon, he continued his leadership journey at DocuSign before eventually joining Nutanix.
Today, Eric leads North America Tech and Product Recruiting at Nutanix and is currently overseeing a major engineering expansion in Vancouver.
Mentors Who Shaped His Recruiting Career
When Eric reflects on his career, several mentors stand out as pivotal influences.
The first is Blair Ruiz, a long-time Aerotek leader who played a crucial role early in Eric’s career. At a time when Eric was still building confidence, Blair continuously encouraged him and reinforced the belief that he could become a top recruiter.
That support helped Eric develop the confidence and drive that would shape his early success.
As Eric transitioned into leadership roles, additional mentors played key roles in his development. Johnny Wilson, his first manager after becoming a recruiting leader, provided the kind of honest and direct feedback that helped Eric grow into the responsibilities of management.
Scott Harrison also became an important mentor and remains someone Eric continues to speak with regularly for guidance and perspective.
Eric also credits his current manager, Will Bernal, as someone who continues to invest in his development and challenge him to grow as a leader.
Each mentor helped shape a different stage of Eric’s journey — from building confidence as a recruiter to developing the leadership mindset required to manage teams and large-scale hiring initiatives.
Advice for Talent Leaders Heading Toward 2026
Eric believes the talent acquisition industry is entering a major turning point driven by artificial intelligence.
While the exact direction of the technology is still evolving, its impact on recruiting is already clear. His first piece of advice to talent leaders is simple: embrace AI rather than resist it.
From automating meeting summaries to generating task lists and analyzing recruiting data, AI tools can significantly improve efficiency and productivity across recruiting workflows.
Eric also encourages leaders to challenge traditional hiring models. Instead of relying solely on conventional recruiting processes, he believes teams should experiment with new approaches such as profile-based hiring or pod-based recruiting structures.
Innovation, in his view, should be continuous.
Finally, Eric emphasizes the importance of using data to guide recruiting decisions. By analyzing metrics and working backward from measurable outcomes, talent leaders can identify bottlenecks, diagnose hiring challenges, and develop more effective strategies.
For Eric, the future of recruiting belongs to leaders who combine experimentation, technology, and data-driven thinking.
And for someone who once nearly pursued an entirely different career path, Eric Hudson’s journey in recruiting continues to evolve alongside the industry itself.
