National Director of Talent Acquisition - Milan Laser Hair Removal
For Ben Gano, recruiting became a calling during one of the most challenging economic periods in recent history.
He entered talent acquisition during the 2008–2009 housing recession, a time when millions of people were struggling to find work and businesses were navigating tremendous uncertainty.
Ironically, Ben's first major career opportunity came through helping others find theirs.
He joined a staffing company and spent the next five years helping light industrial workers re-enter the workforce during a difficult economic climate. The experience left a lasting impression and revealed the powerful role talent acquisition can play in both individual lives and business success.
“I fell in love with it because there’s a direct connection to people, but also a direct impact on organizations,” Ben explains.
That balance between people and business continues to drive his passion today.
Business Impact Through Talent
While Ben's career has always centered around people, his background in business management has strongly influenced how he approaches talent acquisition.
Rather than viewing recruiting solely as a hiring function, he sees it as one of the most important strategic drivers of organizational success.
“I’m energized by the direct impact that people have on the business,” he says.
For Ben, talent acquisition offers a unique opportunity to influence every area of an organization without directly managing those functions.
By bringing the right people into the business and helping them stay and grow, recruiting becomes a catalyst for expansion, innovation, and long-term performance.
“I don’t have to sell the product or run the operations. I get to directly impact every department by bringing the right people in the door.”
That perspective has transformed talent acquisition into what Ben describes as his dream job—a role that combines his passion for business strategy with his commitment to helping people succeed.
The Human Side of Business
When reflecting on the leaders who have shaped his career, one person stands out.
Ben credits Scott Haag, a leader he worked with at Caterpillar, for helping him understand the importance of the human element within business.
Scott taught him that people should never be viewed simply as headcount, requisitions, or positions to fill. Instead, organizations must understand why people choose to work for them and what keeps them engaged, developed, and committed over time.
“That human aspect has to come through engagement, development, and retention of really good people.”
The lesson reinforced Ben’s belief that successful businesses are built not just through operational excellence, but through intentional investment in people.
Beyond individual mentors, Ben also points to the partnerships he has built with educational institutions throughout his career as some of the most influential experiences in his professional journey.
Working alongside college presidents, deans, faculty members, and educators has given him a broader perspective on workforce development and the talent pipeline.
For Ben, talent acquisition begins long before a candidate submits an application.
“The educators and institutions that prepare people for the workforce are a critical part of the talent ecosystem.”
By collaborating with schools, colleges, and training programs, he has helped align educational pathways with real-world workforce needs, creating stronger talent pipelines for both students and employers.
Preparing the Workforce of Tomorrow
One of Ben’s strongest beliefs is that talent acquisition leaders have a responsibility to help shape the future workforce.
Rather than simply reacting to labor market trends, organizations should actively partner with educational institutions to influence how future talent is developed.
Throughout his career, Ben has worked closely with academic leaders to bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace expectations.
These partnerships focus on helping educators understand evolving business needs while ensuring students are equipped with the skills necessary to succeed in a changing economy.
By creating stronger alignment between education and employment, organizations can build more sustainable talent pipelines while giving individuals greater opportunities for career success.
Looking Ahead
As technology continues transforming the recruiting landscape, Ben remains focused on the fundamentals that first drew him to talent acquisition.
While AI, automation, and advanced sourcing technologies are creating new opportunities for recruiters, he believes their true value lies in supporting—not replacing—the human side of hiring.
His focus remains on building strong foundations, creating meaningful candidate experiences, and helping organizations connect with the right talent.
For Ben, recruiting has always been about more than filling jobs.
It is about helping people find opportunities, helping businesses achieve their goals, and creating lasting impact through the power of talent.
By combining business strategy, workforce development, and a people-first mindset, Ben Gano continues to demonstrate the kind of leadership that is helping shape the future of talent acquisition.
