Theresa Zoltan

Senior Director, Field Talent Acquistion - Northwestern Mutual

For Theresa Zoltan, a career in talent acquisition began with a passion for people and a desire to create meaningful connections. Today, as a talent leader at Northwestern Mutual, she helps shape recruitment strategies that bring top talent into the organization while navigating an increasingly complex and rapidly evolving hiring landscape.

From Marketing to Talent Acquisition

Before entering the talent space, Theresa built her career in advertising and marketing. A graduate of Marquette University, she led major brand marketing campaigns for organizations including Southwest Airlines and Kohl's.

While working in client acquisition, she discovered a deeper passion for understanding people and helping them succeed. That realization led her to transition into talent acquisition roughly seven years ago.

Today, she leads talent acquisition strategies focused on attracting new advisors and sales professionals, helping grow Northwestern Mutual’s field force while ensuring candidates find opportunities where they can thrive.

Learning from Great Leaders

Throughout her career, Theresa credits several influential leaders for helping shape her approach to talent strategy.

One of those leaders is Erica Filanowicz, whose data-driven mindset helped Theresa develop stronger strategic decision-making capabilities. Through that mentorship, she learned how to leverage data effectively to guide recruitment initiatives and drive measurable outcomes.

Another significant influence has been Jennica Webster, Northwestern Mutual’s belonging and impact partner. Theresa describes Webster as one of the most insightful professionals she has worked with, highlighting her expertise in organizational psychology, talent strategy, and fostering cultures where people feel they belong.

While those leaders stand out, Theresa emphasizes that her success has been shaped by countless mentors, colleagues, and teammates who have supported her growth throughout her career.

Navigating a Changing Talent Landscape

As hiring environments continue to evolve, Theresa believes adaptability has become one of the most important qualities talent leaders can cultivate.

“The external environment is going through transformations all the time,” she explains. “And especially in the talent space, we tend to see the impact of those changes very quickly.”

Recent years have brought significant shifts in candidate behavior, workforce expectations, and economic conditions. Theresa points to trends such as increased job insecurity, workforce restructuring, and changing candidate sentiment as factors that have required recruiters to rethink how they engage talent.

At the same time, emerging technologies are transforming how organizations recruit, evaluate, and support employees. For Theresa, staying adaptable means remaining open to change, embracing innovation, and being willing to take thoughtful risks when pursuing new approaches.

Advice for Talent Leaders Heading Into 2026

Looking ahead, Theresa encourages talent leaders to focus on building adaptability not only within themselves but across their entire teams.

She believes organizations that foster flexibility, embrace change, and continuously evolve their strategies will be best positioned for long-term success.

“Be open to change,” she advises. “Be willing to take risks, but be methodical about those risks.”

As technology continues to reshape the future of work and organizations face new workforce challenges, Theresa sees adaptability as the foundation for sustainable success.

By combining strategic thinking, a people-first mindset, and a willingness to evolve, she continues to help shape talent strategies that support both organizational growth and individual success.
