CEO & Executive Transition Practice Lead - Russell Reynolds Associates
For Dr Ty Wiggins, leadership development and executive transitions have become a career-defining passion—but his professional journey began somewhere entirely different.
Fresh out of university, Ty started his career coaching basketball. While he enjoyed helping individuals improve their performance, he eventually decided to pursue a different path and entered the world of recruitment through Michael Page in Sydney, Australia.
That move would become the foundation for a career spanning recruitment, consulting, coaching, leadership development, and executive advisory work.
After several years in recruitment, Ty helped launch a joint venture focused on mortgage finance before eventually building his own coaching and consulting business. Over the next nine years, he worked with leaders and organizations while continuing his own academic development, earning multiple degrees and ultimately completing a PhD focused on leadership and senior leadership transitions.
That expertise would open the door to his next chapter.
Joining Russell Reynolds Associates
As Ty completed his doctoral research, Russell Reynolds Associates was expanding its leadership development capabilities.
His specialization in executive transitions aligned perfectly with the firm's mission of helping organizations identify, develop, and successfully onboard senior leaders.
Ty joined Russell Reynolds Associates in 2019 and today leads the firm's Executive and CEO Transition Practice.
His work focuses on helping leaders navigate one of the most challenging periods in their careers: the first one to two years in a new leadership role.
For Ty, this work is both intellectually stimulating and deeply rewarding.
“The people I get to work with are what energize me the most,” he says. “It’s a privilege to be alongside CEOs and senior leaders as they go through these critical transitions.”
Helping Leaders Succeed in Their Most Important Moments
Throughout his career, Ty has remained fascinated by the challenges leaders face when stepping into new roles.
While organizations often invest significant resources in selecting leaders, many still underestimate the complexity of helping them succeed once they arrive.
This observation has shaped much of Ty’s work.
Rather than focusing solely on talent acquisition, he concentrates on what happens after the hiring decision has been made—how leaders adapt, build credibility, develop relationships, and ultimately create impact within a new organization.
His research and consulting experience have reinforced a simple but powerful idea: leadership transitions matter.
When organizations invest in helping leaders navigate those transitions successfully, both the individual and the business benefit.
Learning from Exceptional Leaders
When reflecting on the people who have influenced his career, Ty points to several leaders at Russell Reynolds Associates who have helped shape his professional growth.
One of those leaders is David Lang, a senior managing director who played a significant role in supporting Ty’s development within the firm.
Ty also credits former CEO Clark Murphy and current CEO Konstantin Andropoulos for providing guidance and perspective on building a successful career in and around the executive search and leadership advisory profession.
Their mentorship helped him better understand not only the mechanics of leadership consulting but also the broader impact that search and development firms can have on organizations and leaders.
Together, these experiences reinforced Ty’s belief that successful careers are built through continuous learning, strong relationships, and a willingness to evolve alongside the changing needs of clients.
AI, Data, and the Future of Leadership Development
Like many talent leaders, Ty has closely observed the growing influence of artificial intelligence across both recruiting and leadership development.
Within Russell Reynolds Associates, AI is increasingly helping teams process large volumes of information more effectively.
On the leadership development side, Ty’s team has begun leveraging AI tools to analyze coaching data, identify recurring themes, and uncover insights that can improve both client outcomes and internal learning.
“We’re starting to pull out key themes and use that information for better training and development internally,” he explains.
At the same time, he sees AI becoming a top priority for CEOs and executive teams around the world.
Leaders are asking important questions about how to harness data more effectively, make better talent decisions, and create competitive advantages through technology.
For Ty, the value of AI lies not simply in automation but in helping organizations make more informed decisions about people and leadership.
The Opportunity Ahead for Talent Leaders
As organizations continue investing heavily in AI, Ty believes talent leaders must be careful not to lose sight of one critical area: onboarding and transitions.
While technology can improve efficiency, it cannot fully replace the human support required when leaders join a new organization.
“There’s still a huge opportunity for organizations to do a better job bringing new leaders and employees into the organization,” he says.
Research consistently shows that leadership transitions remain difficult, particularly at the executive level. Yet many companies continue to underestimate the importance of structured onboarding, coaching, and support during those critical first months.
As talent leaders look toward 2026 and beyond, Ty encourages them to focus not only on adopting new technologies but also on ensuring that leaders receive the guidance they need to succeed.
Technology may help identify and select talent, but successful transitions still require human connection, thoughtful support, and intentional development.
For Ty Wiggins, the future of talent is not simply about finding great leaders—it is about helping them thrive once they arrive.
And in a world increasingly shaped by AI, that human element may become more valuable than ever.
